Sugarbush Cafe!

Today Melanie and I had the opportunity to go out for lunch with three of the missionary wives for Susan’s birthday.  Those ladies are so much fun to be around and truly have become like family to one another.  What an amazing support system they have being here with one another!

This morning we all hopped in the cruiser and headed to a beautiful restaurant called Sugarbush Café.  It was an absolutely beautiful day and we enjoyed hearing stories about their time here in Africa. Below is a picture of the café dining area.  The food was delicious and pretty similar to a restaurant you would find in America.  The ladies said this was one of their favorite places to go together!

Coming home from the Sugarbush Café the ladies offered to take us to the store to pick up a few groceries.  We definitely took them up on that offer because lugging ten liters of water home from the Shoprite every trip isn’t as exciting as it sounds.  As if driving on the opposite side of the road isn’t enough of a challenge, many of the drivers here are only concerned with getting where THEY need to go.  On the way to the store many people were driving off the pavement onto the dirt to get in front of other drivers.  Not only is this highly dangerous but it also gets confusing when cars are merging when there is no lane!  Thankfully Mel and I will not be driving during our time here and we will be leaving that task up to the expertise of the missionaries and their wives.

The flowers here are so beautiful and they are everywhere!  The wives joked about the people here being so obsessed with having “tidy” dirt outside of their driveways.  Melanie and I have seen countless people sweeping the dirt outside of their driveways.  Instead of having beautiful flowers that have fallen from the trees, people like the look of bare dirt.  (Notice the giant beetle that seems to blend in.  Very neat to see!)

One more picture…

Melanie and I have become quite the fans of the open-air markets along the side of the roads that sell fruits and vegetables.  Last week we purchased some delicious looking corn but pictured it in our heads to be like the sweet corn we would find in the states.  After boiling the corn in a pot of water we took one big bite into field corn that could break your teeth.  Surprisingly, dipping the rock hard kernels into mustard wasn’t the worst.  We have however since discovered that some vendors sell their corn roasted over an open flame and although looking charred, it is quite delicious and a great snack!  Below is a picture of a larger open-air vendor that we might see on our daily walks.  Luckily I was able to snap some pictures from inside the car today so we weren’t looking as touristy as normal.

Ok really last picture...  And all I have to say is "That's what I call talent!"

Tomorrow Melanie and I are headed to a new church and we are so excited to hear the choir!  Thanking God for all the people here who are helping us experience so much of what God is doing here.  Have a wonderful Saturday!

Hugs,
Kelsi and Mel

  2. Nice blog again Kelsi but I'm getting a little worried that you are starting to enjoy it there way to much and might not want to come home. You know we Love you here in Wisconsin too and want you back. Seriously it sounds like the people there are treating you and Mel well and are just showing you their appreciation of having you there. I hope the rest of your stay is just as enjoyable and can't wait to see some pictures next week of Vcitoria Falls. Thanks again for the beautiful post. Love, Dad
